My Recording Session With Queen
Oh boy, this one got some folks riled up. “I hope this guy get [sic] raped by demons in hell [sic]” was just one of many enthusiastic YouTube comments. Actually, it was about 50/50 love/hate; very partisan. Come on! Any musician, or person with critical thinking skills, can see this video was put together with much love, respect and affinity for the group Queen (Brian May is one of my fave guitarists ever: “the Guv’nor”!).
The Amazing Story of Roger von Shredder
Yet another “parallel universe” video; do you see a pattern here? This was borne out of a project – floated by a major record label! – to take current pop songs of the day and re-record them in a heavy-metal style. We found the artist! We found the song! Wha’ happened?
The Stanley Steemer Variations (by Mia)
Certainly one of the wackiest, most-fun-making-it, and successful videos (over 2 million YouTube views) I’ve been involved with. Broadway chanteuse/actress Mia Gentile and I threw this together in 24 hours to augment a voice demo she had recorded with me while studying Musical Theatre at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. (Okay, it took a little longer than 24 hours to edit.) The video blew up on YouTube, got reviews globally in mainstream and indie press (Today.com, The Daily Mail, Huffington Post, Jezebel, AdWeek, et al), and Mia even appeared on Good Morning America alongside Jerry Seinfeld. The biggest compliment ever was when an ad exec said to me, “This is brilliant. What agency did this?” It’s actually complete DIY: a Sony Handycam on a tripod, no studio, no crew… If we can do it, so can you! In fact, dear reader, until now, we have never officially revealed who was responsible for this. Don’t tell anybody, okay?
