MISSYFIT Presents Bea and the Bees Singing Songs About Rain EP
Between Broadway chanteuse Mia Gentile’s vocal mimicry powers (Kinky Boots, Forbidden Broadway) and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Roger Klug’s solo Indie Pop exploits, MISSYFIT has a built-in propensity for careening wildly and effortlessly between musical genres, inventing personas and characters along the way. So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise then that the duo’s first EP release on April 1 (April Fools’ Day, no less!) is a universe within another universe: a girl-group of triplet sisters who call themselves Bea and the Bees, singing a collection of iconic cover songs which all have a unifying theme: the subject of rain. A concept record, indeed.
MISSYFIT Presents Bea and the Bees Singing Songs About Rain is an engaging romp of 1960s chime-y and chirpy girl-group harmonies (performed by Gentile), backed by a crack Wrecking-Crew-style studio band (played by Klug). The songs are familiar yet reimagined in new and unexpected ways by Bea and her sisters Betty and Bubbles, as adolescent naïveté grapples with the gravity of lyrics by Bob Dylan, John Fogerty (CCR), and Pete Townshend (The Who), not to mention an early Beatles foray into psychedelia! (Where do these girls get their song list from, anyways?)
Not quite parody, not quite pastiche, Gentile and Klug have crafted an organic, musical, and heartfelt nostalgic tribute to an earlier time that may never have existed in the first place (the Portuguese call this saudade). But it sure is fun to visit!
